The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is seeking a PhD candidate for the TactVision: The Liquid Crystal Polymer Invisibility Cloak project. The role focuses on the optical characterization, modeling, and performance benchmarking of advanced coatings designed for one-way transparency, adaptive camouflage, and smart optical interfaces.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Candidates should hold a Masterโ€™s degree (or equivalent) in one of the following fields:

  • Applied Physics, Optics, or Photonics
  • Materials Science or Physical Chemistry
  • Electrical Engineering or Optical Engineering
  • Display Technology, Soft Matter, or Liquid Crystal Science

Preferred Skills: Experience with spectroscopy, polarization optics, ellipsometry, optical microscopy, or display characterization is an advantage. You must be fluent in English and eager to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Characterize one-way transparent liquid crystal polymer films and switchable photonic coatings.
  • Conduct advanced measurements, including angle-dependent reflection, transmission, Mueller matrix analysis, and spectral bandwidth.
  • Evaluate optical performance (image contrast, color fidelity, stray-light suppression) under various stimuli like temperature, humidity, and electric fields.
  • Collaborate with teams focused on material synthesis, modeling, and device integration.
  • Contribute to the validation of smart visors, AR glasses, and privacy-protective displays.
  • Publish research findings and present at international conferences.
