Research Area

The PhD position focuses on:

  • Synthesizing and analyzing anion-conducting solid electrolyte polymers.
  • Producing and characterizing alkaline membranes for fuel cells and electrolyzers operating at temperatures of up to 90°C.
  • Development and application of innovative materials for catalysis, polymer electrolytes, and polymer electrolyte membranes.

Eligibility/Qualification

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Background:
    A Master’s degree in chemistry or materials science (completed with excellent grades).
  • Specialization:
  • In-depth knowledge of synthetic and analytical polymer chemistry.
  • Proficiency in membrane technology.
  • Additional expertise in alkaline solid electrolyte polymers is desirable.
  • Language Skills:
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Personal Attributes:
  • High motivation to pursue a PhD within 3 years.
  • Ability to work independently and with initiative.

Job Description

The selected candidate will work under the “Electrocatalytic Interface Engineering” department, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Simon Thiele, and the “Membrane Polymer Synthesis” (MPS) team, led by Dr. Jochen Kerres. Key responsibilities include:

  • Researching, synthesizing, and analyzing anion-conducting polymers.
  • Developing and characterizing alkaline membranes for renewable energy applications.
  • Publishing research findings in relevant journals and presenting them at national/international conferences.

This project is highly interdisciplinary and targets the energy transition by innovating in key technologies for hydrogen-based energy systems.
