PhD Position – Biodegradable Magnesium-LPSO Alloys: A scholarship opportunity is available for a PhD position focused on the multimodal nanoscale characterization of biodegradable magnesium-LPSO alloys intended for medical implant applications. Research Area

The focus of the research is on characterizing biodegradable magnesium alloys containing Long Periodic Stacking Ordered (LPSO) phases, using advanced imaging techniques to understand their properties and degradation mechanisms in physiological environments.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • University degree (M.Sc., diploma, or equivalent) in materials science, engineering sciences, or physics
  • Experience in X-ray imaging, transmission electron microscopy, or atom probe tomography
  • Skills in image processing and programming with Python or Matlab
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Willingness to travel between research centres

Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a correlative imaging workflow for Mg-LPSO alloys and will engage in the following tasks:

  • Establishing experimental protocols for imaging using X-ray nanotomography.
  • Localizing regions of interest for high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography.
  • Performing microscopy experiments and applying deep learning algorithms for data correlation and analysis.
  • Collaboration in an interdisciplinary team with opportunities for flexible work arrangements.
