Eligibility/Qualification:
- MSc degree in Robotics, Aerospace, Mechanical, or equivalent Engineering discipline (Computer Science or Bioengineering).
- RC airplane or drone experience.
- Excellent writing skills in English with a demonstrated passion for scholarship (reading and writing).
- Strong team player with efficient independent work capabilities.
- General robotics and mechatronics design, maker, and testing skills.
- Passion for scientific questions, engineering innovation, and curiosity about biomechanics.
- RC airplane/drone making & flight-testing experience is a plus.
- Highest ethical research standards, including animal welfare.
Job Description:
The PhD student will be responsible for:
- Translating bird biomechanical insights into an advanced biomimetic aerial robot.
- Studying bird-inspired aerial robot design and control.
- Developing a new flapping and morphing robot capable of flying in turbulence.
- Multidisciplinary experimental research, designing robots, and modeling to corroborate data.
- Soft skills development, including team-based research, high-impact writing, presentation, networking, and career development.
Conditions of Employment:
- Salary: €2,770 gross per month in the first year, up to €3,539 gross per month in the fourth year for a full-time working week.
- Full-time position (1.0 FTE).
- Holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income.
- 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
- Position for four years, with the option of renewal for another three years.
- Immediate availability, with the position to be started within a few months after winning the search.
