PhD Position – BIOSENSEI: Wageningen University & Research invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the project “BIOSENSEI: Biosensor-Based Diagnostic Platform Enabling Real-Time Monitoring of Existing and Emerging Pollutants.” The successful candidate will contribute to developing a real-time, multiplexed biosensor platform for detecting abiotic and biotic pollutants, integrating microbial biosensors with advanced bioengineering and genetic circuitry.

Eligibility/Qualification:
- MSc degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Molecular Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Bionanotechnology, or Biochemical Engineering.
- Skills in molecular biology, biochemistry, and bacterial genetic engineering.
- Knowledge of synthetic biology principles and workflows.
- Interest and familiarity with cutting-edge synthetic biology applications.
- Understanding of biochemistry, electrochemistry, and the interface between biology and electronics.
- Basic modeling experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in English (C1 level).
Job Description: The PhD candidate will:
- Conduct state-of-the-art research in developing whole-cell microbial biosensors.
- Focus on generating an optimal microbial host for the biosensor, considering robustness, adaptability, and Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design aspects.
- Develop mechanisms and technologies for transmitting biosensor signals to hardware and software components.
- Collaborate with a consortium on cellular biology, surface chemistry, nanoelectronics, hardware integration, regulatory and industrial sampling, and artificial intelligence.
- Publish research findings in international academic journals and communicate across disciplines, project partners, and stakeholders.
- Supervise MSc and BSc students working on the project.
