Eligibility/Qualification

  • Very good grades in a Master’s degree in geosciences, resource management, energy technology, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, physics, or related fields.
  • Basic knowledge in economic geology, resource management, energy system analysis, or similar fields.
  • Initial experience in optimization or statistics is preferred.
  • Familiarity with an object-oriented programming language (e.g., Python, Matlab) and MS Office.
  • Analytical and structural thinking capabilities.
  • Interest in analyzing resource use, energy systems, and future technologies.
  • Enjoyment of modeling.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; knowledge of German is an advantage.

Job Description

The doctoral work will investigate how to ensure sustainable and resilient material supply for the energy transition. Key tasks include:

  • Familiarization with global material flow modeling and raw material supply.
  • Analysis of global raw material flows, focusing on mining, processing, distribution, and recyclability of critical materials.
  • Research on resources and reserves of specific critical materials, including novel extraction methods.
  • Evaluation of recycling processes and their influence on material systems.
  • Modeling the impact of materials supply and circular economy on the transformation of energy systems.
