Research Area

Kista, Sweden (Research will primarily be conducted at the Kista High-Speed Transmission lab and Electrum cleanroom).

Eligibility/Qualification

General Requirements (for Umeå University admission):

  • A completed second-cycle level degree, OR
  • At least 240 credits of courses (with at least 60 credits at the second-cycle level), OR
  • Equivalent education/qualifications.
  • Specific Requirement: Completed courses of at least 120 credits within physics or a relevant related subject area. (Note: These requirements must be fulfilled at the time of admission, not necessarily at the time of application).

Desired Background:

  • A Master’s degree in engineering physics, photonics, quantum, or a related field.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills are essential for experimentation.

Meritorious Skills:

  • Prior experience working with optical communication systems.
  • Programming knowledge (e.g., LabView, C++, MATLAB) for experimental setups and data analysis.
  • Understanding of semiconductor device technologies and system-level integration.

Job Description

As a PhD student, your core responsibilities will include:

  • System Development: Developing and characterizing HCF-based optical systems targeting data rates beyond 200 Gbps for 6G and quantum transport.
  • Technology Integration: Exploring the integration of HCF with modulators and Quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits (QPICs) for ultra-low-latency and low-dispersion communication systems.
  • Collaboration: Working alongside partners at RISE, Umeå University, and leading Swedish industry players to design and test next-generation optical transceiver technologies and x-haul solutions.
  • Dissemination: Publishing results in high-quality scientific venues, attending conferences, and engaging in public outreach.
  • Academic Duties: Conducting independent research and participating in teaching and departmental activities.
