PhD Position in Active-Sensing Swarms: The University of Konstanz offers a PhD position focused on investigating the behaviors and interactions within swarms of active-sensing agents, particularly echolocating bats. This project utilizes advanced multi-sensor setups to explore collective movements and sensorimotor strategies within these groups.

Field | Details |
---|---|
Research Area | Sensory Biology, Animal Behavior, Acoustics, Computational Science |
Location | University of Konstanz, Germany |
Eligibility | Masters degree; background in sensory biology, acoustics, or computational science |
Qualification | Experience in animal tracking (audio/video), Python programming, and fieldwork (preferred) |
Description
The PhD candidate will explore the dynamics of active-sensing swarms through the use of cutting-edge microphone arrays, acoustic and thermal cameras, and LiDAR data. The research aims to elucidate the collective movements of echolocating species, including bats and potentially other echolocating birds, by analyzing individual actions and responses to the swarm. The project will also incorporate computational modeling to infer sensorimotor strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Setup and operation of the multi-sensor experimental rig.
- Collection and analysis of data on bat collectives in the field.
- Development of computational models comparing strategies of active-sensing agents.
- Collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams within the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour.
