Summary
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a PhD position (SD-25168) focused on advanced correlative microscopy and isotopic imaging for next-generation Li-ion batteries. This research aims to investigate lithium transport and interfacial processes in silicon-based electrodes using cutting-edge nano-analytical techniques.
Designation
PhD Researcher (Doctoral Candidate)
Position Overview
| Institution | Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) |
| Location | Belvaux / Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxembourg |
| Contract Type | Fixed-term contract (48 months total) |
| Salary | €3,521.71 gross monthly (paid over 13 months) |
| Research Area | Materials Science, Battery Technology, Nano-analytics |
Research Area
The PhD project focuses on the development of high-throughput FIB-SIMS (Focused Ion Beam – Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) workflows and correlative microscopy. The research will explore lithium distribution and transport at the nanoscale, specifically looking at the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) in next-generation silicon-based Li-ion battery electrodes.
Eligibility/Qualification
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Technical Skills: Interest in advanced scientific instruments and basic programming skills (e.g., Python) for automated data analysis.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English (C1 level, written and oral). A B2 English certificate is mandatory for university enrollment unless the Master’s degree was taught entirely in English.
- Qualities: Self-motivated, strong interest in research, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international team.
- Enrollment: The successful candidate must self-register at the University of Luxembourg and cover associated enrollment fees.
Scholarship Description
The doctoral researcher will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, gaining expertise in cryogenic sample preparation, automated high-resolution isotopic mapping, and 3D data processing. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and performing advanced characterization experiments.
- Developing automated acquisition workflows for 2D and 3D maps of lithium isotopes.
- Collaborating with international project partners and scientists.
- Publishing scientific findings and presenting at international conferences.
Benefits include: 32 days of annual leave, 11 public holidays, flexible working hours, and access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure exceeding 5,000 square meters.
