PhD Position in Aerospace Engineering: An exciting opportunity for a fully funded PhD position in Aerospace Engineering is now available at the University of Liverpool. This prestigious position is part of a collaborative project with the European Space Agency (ESA) to support the Hera mission and conduct groundbreaking research in detecting gravity anomalies in asteroids through innovative AI methodologies.

Research Area:

Investigating gravity anomalies in asteroids through the inverse gravity problem and applying machine learning approaches for autonomous detection of asteroids’ internal structure.

Location:

University of Liverpool, collaborating with ESA/ESTEC facility in the Netherlands.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Astrophysics, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong background in applied math, optimization methods, and modeling.
  • Proficient coding skills in languages like Python, MATLAB, or C++.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and guidance, navigation, and control (GNC).

Job Description:

The PhD student will work closely with experts in radio science, ML applications, and ESA’s Advanced Concepts Team to develop AI-based solutions for detecting gravity anomalies in asteroids. Responsibilities include researching, developing theories, and contributing to the development of novel methodologies to address the research question.
