PhD Position in Applied Geosciences, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany

Postdoc in Germany

PhD Position in Applied Geosciences: The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) invites applications for a PhD position focusing on subsurface imaging using drilling-induced noise recorded by geophones and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). This research is part of the RUBADO project, examining High Temperature Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (HT-ATES) systems.

Designation

PhD Position (F/M/D) in Applied Geosciences

Research Area

Subsurface Imaging, Geophysics, Seismology, Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Location

Karlsruhe, Germany (KIT Campus North and Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen)

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Geophysics, Physics, Computational Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong background in seismology, seismic methods, and numerical modeling.
  • Programming experience (e.g., Matlab, C/C++).
  • Interest in geothermal applications and enthusiasm for fieldwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Job Description

The research will include:

  • Data acquisition and pre-processing.
  • Field installation and maintenance of acquisition campaigns.
  • Developing forward synthetic models for 3C-seismic nodes and DAS.
  • Quality control and processing of downhole accelerometer, geophone, and DAS data.
  • Analyzing the signal from drilling-induced noise.
  • Velocity model inversion and seismic imaging.
  • Comparative assessment of DAS and geophones, exploring hybrid approaches.
