PhD Position in Behavioral Biology, German Primate Center (DPZ)

Postdoc in Germany

PhD Position in Behavioral Biology: The German Primate Center (DPZ), a Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen, is offering a PhD position in Behavioral Biology as part of the SPP 2205 “Evolutionary Optimization of Neuronal Processing.” The project, “From Branch to Branch: Unraveling Primate Vision in Arboreal Leaping and Navigation,” explores the impact of vision and light availability on navigational strategies in wild nocturnal grey mouse lemurs. This interdisciplinary project, in collaboration with Georg-August University and Geneva University, aims to investigate key features of early primate vision.

Study Area: Behavioral Biology

Location: German Primate Center (DPZ), Kirindy Forest, Western Madagascar

Eligibility/Qualification: Candidates should possess:

  • A good M.Sc. degree in Behavioral Biology or a related field (e.g., Cognitive Science, Comparative Biology).
  • Experience in observational or experimental studies with animals.
  • Fieldwork experience is advantageous.
  • Skills in analyzing movement data (an advantage).
  • Advanced statistical and analytical abilities (experience using R is a plus).
  • Excellent command of the English language; basic French skills are advantageous.
  • Critical thinking and communication skills.

Description: The project will investigate the influence of vision and light on navigational strategies in grey mouse lemurs. Activities include tracking lemurs in their habitat and conducting cognitive experiments with automated testing devices. The collaborative effort combines expertise in behavioral ecology and cognition, theoretical and computational neuroscience, and neural recording.

What We Offer:

  • A highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.
  • Close supervision by an interdisciplinary Thesis Advisory Committee.
  • Enrollment in a training program with compulsory and elective courses, retreats, and summer schools.
  • Commitment to diversity, welcoming applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
