Scholarship Description: The project aims to develop a real-time biosensor platform for detecting abiotic and biotic pollutants. It involves the generation of whole-cell microbial biosensors through bioengineering and genetic circuitry, with a focus on detecting pollutants such as nutrients, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and microcystins. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Vitor Martins dos Santos and Dr. Enrique Asin-Garcia in a dynamic team focused on biointelligence, biosensing mechanisms, and high-throughput strain optimization.
Eligibility:
- Completed MSc degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Molecular Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Bionanotechnology, or Biochemical Engineering.
- Basic molecular biology, biochemistry, and bacterial genetic engineering skills.
- Knowledge of synthetic biology principles, methodologies, and workflows.
- Interest and familiarity with cutting-edge synthetic biology applications.
- Interest in electrochemistry and the interface between biology and electronics.
- Basic modeling experience is appreciated.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
- English language proficiency at C1 level.
