Fully-Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering – Membrane Processes for Sustainable Sugar Applications
Location: Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Process and Life Science Engineering, Sweden
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Hold a second-cycle qualification or equivalent, comprising at least 240 credits, with a minimum of 60 credits awarded in the second cycle.
- Specific admission requirements for third-cycle studies in Chemical or Food Engineering include a specialized project of at least 30 second-cycle credits in the subject.
- Proficient in English (oral and written).
- Additional requirements include experience in membrane or other separation processes, work experience in the sugar or relevant food industry, lab/pilot-scale equipment assembly, proficiency in Swedish, project management experience, and knowledge of programming languages (Python, C/C++, MATLAB, AspenPlus, and/or LabView).
Description: Collaborate with Nordic Sugar A/S to develop an ultrafiltration process for beet raw juice purification. The project involves lab-scale optimization, pre-treatment development, sustainable cleaning protocol creation, lab-scale post-treatment investigation, and scaling-up to industrial pilot scale. Evaluate the process economically and assess its life cycle for full-scale implementation.
Work Duties:
- Literature review and presentation.
- Lab-scale membrane screening for raw juice clarification.
- Optimization of pre-treatment processes.
- Development of a sustainable cleaning protocol.
- Scale-up of the optimized concept to pilot scale.
- Investigation of lab-scale post-treatment processes.
- Economic evaluation and life cycle assessment.
- Close cooperation with Nordic Sugar, reporting results regularly.

- Very good oral and written English skills.
Assessment Criteria: Selection is based on academic results, knowledge relevant to the thesis project, ability to work independently, communication skills, and other experiences relevant to third-cycle studies.
