Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed a second-cycle degree or equivalent education with at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS at the second-cycle level.
  • Minimum of 90 ECTS credits in chemistry or relevant subjects, with at least 15 ECTS at the advanced level in geochemistry or related fields.
  • Strong background in mineral (geo)chemistry and/or material sciences.
  • Good proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Merits:

  • Practical experience in X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, or electron microscopy.
  • Advanced data evaluation, numerical analysis, or computer programming skills.
  • Proficiency in Swedish (preferred).

Description:

The successful PhD candidate will focus on developing sustainable solutions to prevent mining waste oxidation by creating protective surfaces to mitigate Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). This includes investigating nanoscale mechanisms for coating growth and optimizing methods for effective intervention. The student will collaborate closely with a counterpart studying similar phenomena at the macroscale.

Participation in the Industrial Doctoral School at Umeå University and a three-month internship at Boliden will enhance the research experience. The position also entails possible teaching and departmental work (up to 20%).
