PhD Position in Experimental Physics: Umeå University invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position in Experimental Physics at the Department of Physics. The position is part of the Wallenberg Academy Fellow Grant project, focusing on ‘Ultrafast optical metamaterials for energy-efficient logic operations and information processing – Towards light-based computing technologies.’

Research Area: Experimental Physics – Ultrafast Spectroscopy in Condensed Matter Nanosystems

Location: Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed degree at the second-cycle level or equivalent.
  • At least 240 ECTS credits, including 60 ECTS credits at the second-cycle level.
  • Specific entry requirements for experimental physics (completed physics courses of at least 120 credits).
  • Fluency in English.
  • Background in ultrafast and nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics, electromagnetism, or photochemistry.
  • Previous experience or knowledge in polaritonic chemistry, nanophotonics, data analysis (e.g., MATLAB), finite element/FDTD methods, basic programming/coding in C/Python and Labview is a merit.
  • Willingness to work in an international and diverse group.

Job Description:

  • Conduct research on ultrafast spectroscopy in condensed matter nanosystems.
  • Study nonlinear optical properties and ultrafast electron dynamics in molecular photoswitches coupled to photonic nanostructures.
  • Explore the physics of molecular polaritons at ultrashort timescales.
  • Collaborate with research groups in Europe on related projects.
  • Participation in research education, including relevant courses.
  • Teaching and departmental work (up to 20%).

Terms of Employment:

  • Limited to four years at full time (up to five years with teaching and departmental work).
  • Salary according to the established level for doctoral students.
  • Employment starts on July 1, 2024, or according to agreement.
