PhD Position in Formal Models: The Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT) at Toulouse University is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the interdisciplinary study of collective reasoning in the context of artificial intelligence and psychology. This position is part of the TIRIS project, “Caring about Others: AI and Psychology Meet to Model and Automate Collective Reasoning.”

- Collective reasoning in artificial intelligence
- Decision-making processes from psychological perspectives
- Ethical considerations in AI systems
Description
The PhD thesis under the TIRIS project will formalize collective reasoning using logic, game theory, and social choice theory, developing algorithms for artificial conversational agents. The research will explore:
- Reasoning about Others’ Minds: Understanding desires, goals, and preferences of others.
- Group Reasoning: Cooperative decision-making within a team framework.
- Ethical Reasoning: Incorporating ethical norms and values, promoting fairness and reciprocity in AI interactions.
The research will emphasize two forms of collective reasoning: “warm” collective reasoning based on empathy and group identification, and “cold” collective reasoning based on ethical utility maximization.
