Location: Heriot-Watt University (HWU), Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Open to all students, including home, EU, and overseas applicants.
  • Minimum requirement of an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate honours degree in relevant subject area, preferably with a Masters Degree.
  • Relevant professional qualifications or workplace experience will also be considered.

Description: The PhD candidate will conduct research on well integrity issues in underground hydrogen storage, focusing on two types of wells: hydrogen injectors/producers and legacy plug and abandoned (P&A) wells. The project aims to develop workflows for optimizing well design and operating parameters to mitigate integrity risks. This research expands HWU’s current expertise in risk-based well integrity modeling and assessment, supporting informed decision-making for hydrogen storage infrastructure.

Funding: James Watt Scholarship

  • Full scholarship covering tuition fees (for home and overseas students) and providing an annual stipend (£19,237 in 2024-25) for 42 months.
  • Candidates are expected to pay a continuing affiliation fee (£130) during thesis writing.
