Scholarship & Position Description

As a PhD researcher at TU Darmstadt, you will be an active member of an ambitious research group exploring the fundamental principles that govern modern deep learning systems. Key aspects of the role include:

  • Conducting original theoretical and empirical research in mathematical machine learning.
  • Publishing research findings in leading mathematical journals and tier-one machine learning conferences (such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or COLT).
  • Collaborating with national and international researchers in artificial intelligence and applied mathematics.
  • Participating in teaching assistance and student mentoring within the department as appropriate.
  • Completing a doctoral dissertation (Dr. rer. nat.) at TU Darmstadt.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • An outstanding Master’s degree (or equivalent university degree) in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Data Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
  • A strong academic background in core mathematical subjects, such as analysis, linear algebra, probability theory, statistics, or continuous optimization.
  • A proven interest in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning algorithms.
  • Basic or advanced programming capabilities (e.g., Python, PyTorch, or Julia) for running numerical experiments and algorithmic validation.
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English; knowledge of German is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills, accompanied by the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
