PhD Position in Micro-Mechanics: The Surface Technology and Tribology (STT) chair at the Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET) is offering a full-time PhD position for a motivated candidate interested in studying friction mechanisms in single-grain sliding. This research aims to understand dynamic friction behavior at the micro-scale to develop solutions for various industrial and geo-mechanical systems.
Study Area: Mechanical Engineering, Tribology
Location: Faculty of Engineering Technology, University of Twente, Netherlands
Eligibility/Qualification:
- A master’s degree (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with a background in tribology preferred.
- Experience in experimental design and techniques is advantageous.
- Proficiency in English language and strong interpersonal skills.
- Passion for learning and collaboration.
Description:
The PhD candidate will conduct research on friction phenomena in single-grain contacts under highly accelerated slip. This involves designing and implementing experiments, analyzing thermographic and spectroscopic data, developing experimentally validated friction models, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to calibrate and implement these models in larger-scale applications. Active participation in research discussions, presentations, and publications is encouraged.
