Uppsala University’s Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) is offering a PhD position in Microbiology. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in medical microbiology to pursue doctoral studies within an international and research-intensive environment.

About the Department

IMBIM provides a broad international environment for research and teaching, covering areas such as biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumour biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. Project Description

The successful candidate will join research groups investigating the mechanisms and dynamics of plasmid copy number in pathogenic bacteria. The project focuses on the role of plasmids in infection biology and the evolution of antibiotic resistance, aiming to determine how variations in plasmid copy number influence resistance evolution and horizontal gene transfer. The project offers access to a large collection of genetically well-characterized microorganisms, infection models, cutting-edge tools, and a stimulating work environment.

Duties

  • Primarily engage in research work and doctoral studies.
  • Other duties, such as administration and teaching, may be included up to a maximum of 20% of the employment.

Requirements

Entry Requirements for Doctoral Studies

  • A Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Genetics, Microbiology, Evolutionary Biology, or a related field; OR
  • At least 240 credits in higher education, with a minimum of 60 credits at Master’s level, including an independent project worth at least 15 credits; OR
  • Substantially equivalent knowledge acquired through other means.

Specific Qualifications

  • Strong interest in basic research in microbiology and bacterial genetics.
  • Previous practical experience in cell and molecular microbiology is highly desired.
  • Required: Experience in bacterial genetics.
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Personal qualities: Collaboration and communication skills, analytical capacity, initiative, and ability to work independently and interact with other research groups.

Additional Qualifications (Merits)

  • Working knowledge in bioinformatics and statistics.

  • Type of employment: Temporary position (according to Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7).
  • Scope of employment: 100%.

  • Salary: According to local agreement.
