PhD Position in Microstructure of Cellulose, Zurich, Switzerland

Postdoc Position at University of Zurich Switzerland

PhD Position in Microstructure of Cellulose: We are excited to offer a fully funded PhD position, focused on an interdisciplinary project that integrates soft matter physics and material science to develop the next generation of architected bacterial cellulose for fundamental and sustainable applications.

PhD Position in Engineering the Microstructure of Bacterial Cellulose for Sustainable Applications

Designation:
PhD Student

Research Area

The project aims to engineer the structure of bacterial cellulose at different length scales to create functional materials for sustainable applications.

Location:
Zurich

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in material science, physics, chemistry, or mechanical engineering.
  • Strong background in the physics and chemistry of colloidal systems.
  • Prior experience with optical/confocal microscopy, soft (bio)materials, and image analysis techniques (Matlab/Python/Mathematica).
  • Curious, a good team player, and motivated to work independently at the forefront of sustainable materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Job Description:

The project aims to develop novel methods to engineer the structure of bacterial cellulose at different length scales and create functional materials for sustainable applications. This will involve using a combination of bottom-up and top-down approaches to control structural features, characterizing structure-function relationships with various techniques (including microscopy, mechanical tests, and X-rays), and exploring integrations of biofabricated materials with sustainable buildings.

How to Apply:

To apply, please submit the following documents through our online application portal:

  • CV
  • Short motivation letter detailing how your background fits the profile, your scientific interests, and scientific achievements to date (max. 1 page)
  • Contact information of 2 references
  • Transcripts from MSc and BS degrees
