PhD Position in Molecular Ecology: Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, in collaboration with the University of Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded PhD Position in Molecular Ecology and Aquatic Biodiversity. The position, spanning four years, is part of a comprehensive project led by Prof. Dr. Florian Altermatt, focusing on the taxonomy, biodiversity, and ecosystem role of freshwater amphipods in Switzerland/Central Europe.
Summary Table:
Position | PhD Position in Molecular Ecology and Aquatic Biodiversity |
---|---|
Duration | 4 years |
Location | University of Zurich and Eawag, Switzerland |
Funding | Fully funded |
Study Area: The research will delve into the genetic, functional, and taxonomic diversity of freshwater amphipods, particularly the Gammarus fossarum cryptic species complex, within Switzerland/Central Europe.
Scholarship Description:
PhD Position in Molecular Ecology and Aquatic Biodiversity
The PhD position offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, including molecular laboratory facilities for DNA barcoding and eDNA metabarcoding, fieldwork opportunities, and access to an extensive dataset of amphipod samples. The research aligns with the broader activities of the Altermatt lab, focusing on meta-ecosystems and environmental DNA (eDNA) to comprehend aquatic biodiversity.
Eligibility: Ideal candidates should possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Population Genetics, Environmental Sciences, or a related subject. Previous experience in molecular ecology, biodiversity sciences, or spatial ecology is crucial. Proficiency in molecular data analysis (population genetics, barcoding analysis), both in laboratory and bioinformatics, is essential. Strong statistical skills, a conceptual understanding of ecological and/or evolutionary theory, excellent laboratory skills, and a valid car driving license for fieldwork are required.
Required Documents: Interested applicants should submit a single PDF file containing a motivation letter, a comprehensive CV (including a publication list), the names and e-mail addresses of three academic references, and copies of academic qualification certificates.
How to Apply: Applications must be submitted through the provided webpage by 10th December 2023. Click on the button below to access the application form directly.
Last Date for Apply: Applications must be submitted by 10 December 2023. Early submissions are encouraged.
The University of Zurich and Eawag are committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunities, particularly encouraging applications from women. The successful candidate is expected to start within the first half of 2024 at the latest.
