Designation
Doctoral Researcher / PhD Candidate (Physics of Nanoscale Systems)
Research Area
The research project focuses on Physics of Nanoscale Systems, particularly investigating the nanoscale processes underlying light-to-electricity conversion in silicon-based photovoltaic devices through off-axis electron holography, ultrafast laser excitation, and analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
Location
Forschungszentrum Jülich, Jülich, Germany.
Scholarship / Position Description
The Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C-1) investigates materials at the atomic scale using advanced electron microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. In this doctoral project, you will probe electrostatic potentials and charge carrier dynamics with high spatial and temporal resolution to identify efficiency-limiting recombination and defect-related effects in photovoltaic devices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparation of electron-transparent TEM lamellae and specimens.
- Operation and optimization of ultrafast laser systems (fs–ps range) and optical setups.
- Characterization of electrostatic potentials and excited carrier concentrations using off-axis electron holography.
- Mapping of charge carrier lifetimes by synchronizing ultrashort laser pulses with pulsed electron beams and detectors.
- Structural and electrical characterization using TEM techniques (STEM, CBED, EELS, and geometrical phase analysis).
- Investigation of carrier generation, recombination processes, and their interactions with defects.
- Analysis, interpretation, and documentation of experimental data for scientific manuscripts and conference presentations.
- Co-supervision of students and research interns.
Eligibility & Qualifications
To be considered for this PhD scholarship position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualification: An excellent Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of semiconductor physics, laser physics, and optics. Prior experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is highly desirable.
- Skills & Motivation: High level of self-motivation, strong experimental skills, and willingness to take responsibility for lab instrumentation.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and international research team.
- Language: Very good communication skills in written and spoken English.
Benefits & Support
- Remuneration: Competitive salary according to TVöD-Bund Pay Group 13 (75%), including a 75% annual special bonus.
- Doctoral Training: Comprehensive support and training opportunities through the JuDocS program.
- Leave & Flexibility: 30 days of annual leave with flexible working hours and mobile work options.
- Infrastructure: Access to world-class national and international research facilities.
- International Support: Assistance from the International Advisory Service for relocating researchers.
