Research Area

The emergence of molecular complexity and self-replicating chemical systems at the origin of life.

The project sits at the intersection of physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and evolutionary biology. It specifically focuses on the emergence of molecular complexity from simple building blocks (like amino acids and nucleotides) toward self-replicating chemical systems, with a long-term goal of understanding the emergence of proto-ribosomal machinery.

Job Description

  • Investigate the transition of simple building blocks into complex, self-replicating systems.
  • Focus on the study of peptide amyloids and their specific interactions with RNA and membranes.
  • Conduct cutting-edge experimental research utilizing state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure.
  • Collaborate proactively within an enthusiastic, interdisciplinary team spanning multiple scientific fields.
  • Develop critical thinking, data analysis, and project management skills while publishing in leading journals and presenting at international conferences.

Eligibility / Qualification

  • Education: Must hold a Masterโ€™s degree with a strong background in experimental chemistry (ideally with specific experience in physical and/or organic chemistry).
  • Interests: A keen interest in interdisciplinary research and the origins of life.
  • Soft Skills: Strong teamwork abilities, excellent communication skills, and a proactive contribution to a positive group dynamic.
  • Language: Fluent written and spoken English presentation skills are essential.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the ETH Zurich Online Application Portal. Applications sent via email or postal services will not be considered.

Please prepare and upload the following documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. Motivation Letter (Maximum of 1 page) explaining your specific interest in the rise of molecular complexity in the origin of life.
  3. Academic Transcripts: Copies of available BSc/MSc diplomas or current official transcripts.
  4. References: Contact details of 2 referees (who may be contacted during the review process).

Note: Pre-selection is carried out entirely by human recruiters, not by artificial intelligence. For questions regarding the position, you can contact Prof. Dr. Roland Riek directly via email at comiotto@ethz.ch.
