PhD Position in Parasite and Virus Ecology: The Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) invites applications for a PhD position focusing on the ecological role of parasites and viruses in the Elbe Estuary. This project will utilize biochemical and molecular tools as part of the DFG Graduate Program aimed at understanding biota-mediated effects on carbon cycling in estuaries.

Eligibility/Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or a related field
  • Proficiency in molecular biology, especially DNA metagenomics
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and statistical tools
  • Experience in data analysis and scientific publication
  • Good English communication skills and ability to work in a team
  • A driver’s license is beneficial

Job Description

The PhD candidate will:

  • Conduct laboratory analysis of planktonic and benthic microorganisms, including shotgun metagenomics
  • Perform field sampling along the salinity gradient of the Elbe Estuary
  • Conduct bioinformatics and statistical analyses
  • Relate environmental variables to microbial dynamics
  • Engage in meso- and microcosm experiments
  • Contribute to IGB’s scientific activities and publications
