Designation
PhD Candidate / Doctoral Researcher in Peripheral Neuroscience and Neuroimmunology.
Research Area
The position is situated at the intersection of Peripheral Neuroscience, Neuroimmunology, Sensory Biology, and Cancer Biology. Research focuses on understanding how peripheral neurons sense disease environments, remodel innervation during tumor progression, and functionally communicate with immune cells.
Location
Department of Biomedicine (DBM), University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in neuroscience, neurobiology, physiology, biomedical sciences, or a closely related discipline by the project start date.
- Practical laboratory research experience with a solid grounding in experimental biology.
- A demonstrated interest in sensory biology, interoception, autonomic regulation, or neuroimmune interactions.
- A methodical, rigorous approach to scientific experimentation and enthusiasm for mastering new techniques.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills in English and a collaborative team mindset.
- Desirable (not mandatory): Prior experience with microscopy, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, neuronal cell cultures, anatomical tracing, or mouse models. Prior experience in immunology or oncology is not required.
Scholarship & Project Description
Hosted by the Department of Biomedicine (DBM)—a collaborative hub of over 67 research groups across Basel—this PhD project will investigate how sensory and peripheral neurons detect tissue-level pathology and how their signaling influences inflammation and antitumor immunity.
Depending on the candidate’s core strengths and research interests, methodological approaches will include:
- Anatomical tracing and high-resolution imaging of peripheral nerves and ganglia.
- Viral and genetic tools to target and manipulate discrete neuronal populations.
- Functional interrogation of neuroimmune signaling and sensory circuitry.
- Single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics profiling.
- In vivo disease models integrated with cellular assays and immune profiling.
The successful candidate will receive dedicated mentorship, cross-disciplinary training, and access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure at the University of Basel.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should prepare and submit an application package containing:
- Motivation Letter: A personalized letter explaining your research interests, relevant experience, and why you wish to join the Cancer Neuroimmunology Laboratory. Applications without a motivation letter will not be considered.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Up-to-date CV including academic qualifications and laboratory experience.
- Academic Transcripts: Official records of your undergraduate and graduate degrees.
- Referees: Contact information for two academic referees.
- AI Usage Statement: A brief statement disclosing whether AI tools were utilized for language refinement or drafting, naming the tools and their purpose.
Last Date for Apply
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Early submission is strongly encouraged.
