PhD Position in Statistical Machine Learning: A joint PhD position is available in the Pertz Lab (Institute of Cell Biology) and the Ginsbourger Group (Institute of Mathematical Statistics & Actuarial Science). This collaborative project aims to develop autonomous “self-driving” microscopes that leverage machine learning and statistical modeling to enhance our understanding of biological dynamics.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Engineering
  • Solid skills in statistical modeling and probability theory
  • Experience in coding (Python, R, Julia, Matlab)
  • Motivation to collaborate closely with experimental researchers
  • Curiosity about biological systems (prior wet-lab experience not required)

Description

The PhD candidate will be integrated into two research environments, working on pioneering techniques that include:

  • Development of active Bayesian experimental designs
  • Implementation of operator-valued and deep kernels
  • Closed-loop control of biological systems using physics-informed neural networks

This position offers the rare chance to see mathematical models guiding experiments in real time, fostering a unique interdisciplinary approach to research.
