PhD Position in Water Disinfection Chemistry: Applications are invited for a PhD position focusing on Water Disinfection Chemistry at ETH Zurich. This project will investigate chloronitramide, a novel disinfection byproduct formed from chloramines, to enhance monitoring and understanding of its formation.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in environmental engineering, chemistry, or related fields.
  • Good command of English (spoken and written).
  • Knowledge of water treatment processes is desired but not mandatory.

Description

This PhD project involves:

  • Developing analytical approaches to quantify chloronitramide.
  • Investigating the formation mechanisms of chloronitramide influenced by water quality parameters.
  • Gaining expertise in analytical chemistry techniques like liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and membrane inlet mass spectrometry.
  • Opportunities for scientific communication and mentorship through co-supervision of undergraduate and master’s theses.
  • Freedom to shape the project’s direction beyond initial goals.
