PhD Position: Multiscale Modelling: The Computational Science Lab (CSL) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites applications for a PhD position focused on multiscale modelling of Endothelial Cell (EC) monolayers in the microvasculature. The research will explore the dynamics of specific pathways impacting EC monolayer integrity, with implications for understanding vascular health and disease progression.
PhD Position: Multiscale Modelling of Endothelial Cell Monolayers in Health and Disease
Study Area: Multiscale Modelling of Endothelial Cell Monolayers in Health and Disease
Location: University of Amsterdam (UvA), Amsterdam, Netherlands
Eligibility/Qualification: Candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- A first Master’s degree or equivalent in computational science, computational biology, computational (bio)physics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
- Research experience in applying in-silico modelling in life sciences, physiology, or medicine.
- Proven programming expertise in Python or C++.
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary research team.
- Proficiency in English.
- Affinity with cell biology and a willingness to learn wet-lab techniques.
Description: The successful candidate will work within the Computational Science Lab (CSL) at UvA, collaborating closely with the physiology group of Prof. Peter Hordijk at the Free University Amsterdam. The project aims to develop and implement mathematical models to study the dynamics of endothelial cell monolayers in the microvasculature, focusing on specific signalling pathways (RhoA and RhoB GTPases) and their impact on EC integrity. The research involves integrating in silico modelling with in vitro experiments to elucidate bistability and hysteresis in EC activation and to understand the transition from acute to chronic EC activation.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should apply online via the university’s application portal before the closing date of June 10, 2024. The application should include:
- A detailed CV including the months of education and work experience.
- A letter of motivation.
- The names and email addresses of two references who can provide letters of recommendation.
- Master’s thesis (draft form if not yet finalized).
Please ensure that all requested documents are included in a single PDF file. A knowledge security check may be part of the selection procedure.
