Research Area

The research focuses on developing an integrated multiscale model for large active area Solid Oxide Electrolysers (SOECs). This involves understanding the impact of various design factors on the performance of SOEC cells and stacks, essential for advancing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of green hydrogen production.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience and/or strong interest in:
  • Numerical modelling
  • Coding and machine learning
  • Electrochemistry
  • Transport phenomena
  • Structural mechanics and reactor design

Job Description

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop electrochemical and thermomechanical cell and stack models for large active area SOEC technology.
  • Incorporate gas manifolds and hot-box design into the modelling methodology.
  • Study the effects of design factors at the cell and stack levels, including electrode microstructure and flow distribution.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners for a techno-economic analysis of the SOEC technology.
  • Potentially reduce model complexity through the development of neural network surrogates.
