PhD Position on Microbiomes and Interactions, KU Leuven, Belgium

Postdoctoral Fellow in Belgium

PhD Position on Microbiomes and Interactions: A unique opportunity has arisen for two PhD candidates to participate in an interdisciplinary research project examining the effects of climate stressors on nectar microbial communities and their interactions with pollinators. The focus of this position is on the study of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) and aims to explore how heat and drought affect these crucial ecological relationships.

PhD Position on Climate Change Impact on Nectar Microbiomes and Pollinator Interactions

Designation

PhD Position – “Pollinators under pressure: how climate stressors shape flowers and their interactions with nectar-dwelling microbes and pollinators”

Eligibility/QualificationMaster’s degree in Engineering Technology, Bioengineering, Biology, or equivalent (cum laude); Knowledge in relevant fields; Excellent communication skills
Duration4 Years (Starting from October 1, 2025)

Description

This PhD project aims to investigate the impact of climate stressors, specifically heat and drought, on the taxonomic composition and functional properties of nectar microbial communities. The research will evaluate how these stressors affect the production of volatiles that attract pollinators and will explore the effects of altered nectar microbiomes on pollinator behavior using both robotic flowers and real oilseed rape plants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on nectar and microbial interactions under climate stress.
  • Analyze taxonomic compositions and functional properties of nectar microbial communities.
  • Assess pollinator behavior in response to changes in nectar microbiomes.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team.
