PhD Position on Spatio-temporal Dynamics: Join the vibrant and dynamic research community at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin. The Department of Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD position starting from 01.03.2024 (or soon thereafter). This position is part of the Leibniz Collaborative Excellence project “Pollution in urban ponds, eco-evolutionary dynamics and ecosystem resilience” (POUNDER) and focuses on the spatio-temporal dynamics of pollutants in urban ponds.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s (or equivalent) degree in environmental chemistry, hydrology, environmental sciences, geoecology, geochemistry, or a related field.
  • Practical experience with field sampling and laboratory work.
  • Bonus: Experience in statistical analysis, chemical analytics, and water pollutants/water isotopes.
  • Very good English skills, including scientific writing.
  • Dedicated, collaborative, with good communication skills.

Job Description:

PhD Position on Spatio-temporal Dynamics of Pollutants in Urban Ponds (m/f/x)

  • Conduct fieldwork and sampling of urban ponds in Berlin.
  • Perform laboratory sample preparation and integrated analysis of trace organic contaminants and stable water isotopes.
  • Process existing data and conduct statistical analyses.
  • Participate in an outdoor mesocosm experiment to assess the impact of pollution on aquatic organisms.
  • Write manuscripts for submission to international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Disseminate results through presentations at national and international conferences.
