Research Area and Project Description

The project aims to quantify how viral perturbations of microbial metabolism translate into measurable biosignatures in low-oxygen environments. The research focuses on sulfur-cycling microbial communities (e.g., purple sulfur bacteria and associated viruses), combining bioinformatics, quantitative modeling, and experimental data integration.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing multi-omics datasets (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, viromes).
  • Identifying metabolic pathways (KEGG pathways) and rate-limiting steps targeted by viruses.
  • Developing quantitative models to simulate metabolic networks and estimate thresholds for detectable biosignature shifts.
  • Integrating experimental data and participating in field campaigns.

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • Education: MSc (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, computational biology, physics, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Skills: Strong programming skills and a demonstrated interest in quantitative analysis and modeling.
  • Aptitude: Ability to work at the intersection of biology, physics, and Earth sciences, with an interest in linking models to experimental data.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should send an application to alice.boscosantos@unil.ch containing the following:

  1. Current CV
  2. Motivation letter
  3. Contact details of 2โ€“3 referees

Important Dates:

  • Application Deadline: August 5, 2026
  • Interview Period: August 15โ€“20, 2026
  • Expected Start Date: Fall 2026
