Fully-Funded PhD Positions at ATOMS Lab, UMBC – Spring 2025 Start
Designation: PhD Student
Research Area: Artificial Intelligence, Molecular Simulations, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science
Location: University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering, Baltimore, MD, USA
Eligibility/Qualification:
- For the PhD in Simulation Methods for Multicomponent Adsorption of Water Pollutants:
- BS/MS/PhD in Chemical or Environmental Engineering
- Passion for research in chemical sciences and engineering
- Strong coding skills and software development experience
- Optional experience in molecular simulations and/or machine learning
- Strong math, problem-solving, and communication skills
- For the PhD in Logic and LLMs for Evaluating Scientific Claims:
- Undergraduate or graduate preparation in Chemical Engineering or Computer Science
- Background or keen interest in mathematics (double major/minor preferred)
- Experience in coding, particularly with LLM APIs; experience with Lean is a plus
- Strong collaboration, communication, organization, and time management skills
Job Description:
- Simulation Methods for Multicomponent Adsorption of Water Pollutants:
- Develop and implement new Monte Carlo simulation algorithms in open-source software
- Use simulations to predict water pollutant adsorption at trace concentrations
- Integrate machine learning-based force fields and innovative Monte Carlo moves for chemisorption
- Logic and LLMs for Evaluating Scientific Claims:
- Collaborate with a team to build AI systems for scientific claim evaluation
- Write and program proofs in Lean 4 to enhance logical reasoning tools
- Develop new methodologies to interface LLMs with formal logic for science
