Scholarship Description:

Invading a New Host: Importance of the Bacterial Accessory Genetic Material in Host Colonization

The project explores the impact of human-induced changes on microbial life, emphasizing antibiotic use, climate change, and pollution. Investigating bacterial accessory genomes, the project aims to decode their roles in the colonization of new hosts. Using interdisciplinary approaches, the PhD student will delve into functional and structural aspects of accessory genes in Escherichia coli strains, study host-bacteria interactions using Galleria mellonella larvae, and develop real-time monitoring technology for host colonization.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a BSc/MSci 2:1, Masters (MSc or MRes) at Merit/Distinction, or equivalent professional experience. Proficiency in English (IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5) is required.
