PhD Positions in 3D Bioprinting: Two fully funded PhD studentships are available at Trinity College Dublin under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Kelly. The positions are funded by Science Foundation Ireland and will focus on engineering structurally anisotropic and mechanically functional musculoskeletal tissues using biofabrication technologies. The research will leverage advancements in bioprinting and bioink development to engineer biomimetic articular cartilage grafts, with broad applications in orthopaedic medicine and regenerative tissue engineering.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline
  • Experience in biomaterials, tissue engineering, 3D (bio)printing, cell culture, and/or biomechanical testing is desirable

Job Description:
The PhD candidates will work on an innovative project aimed at regenerating musculoskeletal tissues by engineering grafts that mimic the heterogeneous and anisotropic structure and mechanics of native tissue. The project will involve the development of a biofabrication platform that guides stem cell-derived cartilage spheroids through fusion and remodeling processes, creating articular cartilage grafts with depth-dependent structural and mechanical properties. The research will primarily focus on tissue engineering and bioprinting techniques, with the potential to transform treatments for damaged synovial joints and prevent osteoarthritis.
