PhD Candidate | Soft Robotics | University of Stuttgart, Germany | Master’s degree in mechanics, materials science, or related field; Experimental skills in fabrication, 3D printing, and material characterization; Strong numerical skills are a plus. |
Description: The Soft Machines and Robotic Systems group is dedicated to advancing the field of soft robotics, where intrinsically soft materials are used to create robotic actuators and sensors. This interdisciplinary research explores the potential of smart responsive materials that react to various stimuli to power and actuate robots, paving the way for innovative mechanical designs and material properties. As a successful candidate, you will engage in groundbreaking research, gain valuable experimental and numerical skills, publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and prepare for a successful research career in academia.
Your Profile: We are seeking candidates with a Master’s degree and a strong background in mechanics. Given the experimental nature of our research, relevant skills in fabrication, 3D printing, mechanical and material characterization, and lab experience with soft materials are essential. Proficiency in numerical skills such as FEM, 3D modeling, and programming (e.g., Python) will be viewed favorably. While backgrounds in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or materials science are suitable, a genuine passion for science is paramount. Collaborative teamwork and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential attributes we value.
What We Offer: PhD students will receive a competitive international salary and benefits based on the TV-L E13 scale. Initial contracts will be offered for 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 5 years. We provide access to state-of-the-art research facilities, extensive career and family support, and access to numerous research partners in the Cyber Valley ecosystem, all within one of Germany’s most beautiful and innovative regions.
How to Apply: Interested candidates can apply by sending an email to aniket.nalam@ib.uni-stuttgart.de with a single PDF document containing the following:
- Full CV (including name and contact information of 2-3 references)
- A brief (max 1 page) motivation or research statement
- Copies of any peer-reviewed publications
Your cover letter should be forward-looking, describing the research direction you would like to pursue and why you are the ideal candidate for it. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled, but those received by 15th November 2023 will be given priority. Early applications are encouraged.
