PhD Program in Individual Differences: The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) offers a PhD project focused on how humans perceive real and artificial faces. This research will explore the individual differences in perception of AI-generated images and deepfakes, with the supervision of Dr. Emma Stewart and Prof. Isabelle Mareschal. The project is funded by the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
Designation
PhD Program in Individual Differences in Artificial Face Perception
Key Information | Details |

Research Area | Psychology, Neuroscience |
Location | Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) |
Funding | China Scholarship Council (CSC) |
Last Date to Apply | 29th January 2025 |
Research Area
The project focuses on understanding how humans perceive different types of faces, including real, manipulated by AI (like deepfakes), and humanoid robots. It aims to uncover the psychological mechanisms behind individual differences in recognizing and interpreting these images.
Eligibility/Qualification
Candidates should have or expect to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree along with a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as:
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Biology
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Engineering
Knowledge of programming (Matlab, R, Python), psychophysics, eye-tracking, and computer graphics (like mesh manipulation in Blender) are advantageous but not required. Applicants must also meet the IELTS language requirements before the CSC application deadline, ideally by 1st March 2025.
Description
The project will employ behavioral, psychophysical, and eye-tracking measures to investigate how individual differences affect perception of artificial faces. This research is crucial, especially as deepfake technology becomes more advanced, making it increasingly difficult to authenticate images. Candidates will receive training in experimental methods and analysis techniques.
How to Apply
Formal applications must be submitted through the QMUL online application form by 29th January 2025. Applicants should indicate their status as a ‘CSC Scholar’ in the funding section. Required documents include:
- CV
- Personal Statement
- Evidence of English Language (e.g., IELTS Certificate)
- Copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates
