PhD Project in Interferometric Microscopy: The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN; Section of Plant Glycobiology) & the Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen, are offering a joint PhD position. The interdisciplinary project, led by Prof. Staffan Persson, Assoc. Prof. Poul-Martin Bendix, and Ass. Prof. Guillermo Moreno Pescador, focuses on developing a novel label-free microscope using interferometric scattering for real-time visualization of vesicle dynamics and inter-organellar interactions in living plant cells. The project aims to decipher aspects of cell wall and plasma membrane trafficking.

Eligibility/Qualification:
- MSc degree or equivalent in a field related to cell biology, optics, and bioimaging
- Strong background in optics, photonics, and biophysics
- Experience with interferometric techniques and/or bioimage processing
- Excellent English skills
- Motivation for research and a keen interest in plant biology
Job Description:
PhD Project in Interferometric Microscopy of Live Plants
The selected candidate will:
- Develop a novel label-free microscope based on interferometric scattering
- Study vesicle trafficking in plant roots using the developed microscope
- Work closely with experts in optics and photonics
- Collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team in microscopy, physics, biochemistry, and molecular biology
- Conduct independent research, contribute to international publications, and present findings at conferences
- Participate in the international graduate school MBML (desirable)

PhD Programme:
- Three-year full-time study within the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme)
- Employment is conditional upon successful enrolment in the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen
- Terms of employment and salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC)
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Conduct independent research under supervision
- Complete PhD courses
- Participate in research environments and international exchanges
- Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
- Write scientific papers and defend a PhD thesis
