PhD Project on Thermo-Chemical Destruction: This scholarship opportunity is for a PhD position focused on the development and optimization of thermo-chemical destruction processes for the removal of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from sewage sludge. The project aims to enhance current waste treatment methods to mitigate environmental risks posed by PFAS.

Research Area
The focus of this research is on the thermo-chemical destruction of PFAS compounds from sewage sludge through improved incineration methods, pyrolysis, and gasification.
Location
Wetsus Research Facility, Oostergoweg 9, 8911 MA Leeuwarden, Netherlands.
Eligibility / Qualification
- A Master’s degree (MSc) in chemical engineering, process engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Independent and motivated researcher with a strong interest in multidisciplinary work.
- Prior knowledge of PFAS and/or sludge treatment is an advantage.
- A valid driver’s license for the Netherlands is preferred.
Description
The selected candidate will evaluate the effectiveness of different thermal treatments, including incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification, in removing PFAS and their by-products from sewage sludge. Key responsibilities will include:
- Developing measurement techniques for PFAS mass balance across phases (water, solid, and liquid).
- Conducting field sampling and analyzing data to assess degradation efficiency.
- Investigating critical operational parameters and performing laboratory-scale simulations.
- Exploring process optimization strategies to convert hazardous emissions into safer disposal options.
