PhD Project: Understanding DNA, University of Lorraine, France

Postdoc in France

PhD Project: Understanding DNA: Bacterial conjugation, a pivotal mechanism driving the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes, presents serious challenges to public health. While extensively studied in Gram-negative bacteria, the mechanisms underlying DNA recruitment by Gram-positive Type IV Secretion Systems (T4SSs) remain largely unexplored.

Study Area: The PhD project aims to provide a thorough understanding of the mechanisms governing DNA recruitment and transfer through Type IV Secretion Systems (T4SSs) in Gram-positive bacteria, with a focus on ICESt3, a mobile genetic element prevalent in streptococci.

Scholarship Description: The scholarship offers an opportunity for a PhD candidate to engage in interdisciplinary research encompassing microbial genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology. The project focuses on elucidating the mechanisms driving DNA recruitment and transfer through Gram-positive T4SSs, employing diverse methodologies including microbial genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent with outstanding academic records. Proficiency in molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or structural biology is essential for this position.

Required Documents: Interested candidates are required to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and one to two recommendation letters.

How to Apply: To apply for the scholarship, please send the required documents to Badreddine Douz and Nathalie Leblond-Bourget by June 15th.
