📝 Summary

The University of Oslo is inviting applications for a PhD Research Fellowship at Integreat – Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning. The project focuses on developing private and fair synthetic data generation methods with high utility.

The research will involve deep-learning-based synthetic data generators, model approximation, privacy and fairness metrics, and the critical assessment of the balance between privacy, fairness, and data utility. The project lies at the intersection of machine learning, statistics, and ethics.

🎓 Eligibility / Qualification

Applicants should have:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • A foreign Master’s degree equivalent to at least four years of Norwegian higher education.
  • Good oral and written English communication skills.
  • Applicants in the final stage of completing their Master’s degree may also apply, provided the degree is completed before admission/employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with deep learning models.
  • Strong programming skills.

Academic grade requirements:

  • Bachelor’s average: C or better (Norwegian grading equivalent).

💻 Job Description

The selected candidate will conduct doctoral research on methods for generating high-utility synthetic data while protecting privacy and promoting fairness. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing deep-learning-based synthetic data generators.
  • Designing methods for privacy-preserving model approximation.
  • Developing privacy and fairness measures.
  • Incorporating fairness/privacy objectives into model training.
  • Evaluating the trade-offs between privacy, fairness, and utility.
  • Conducting interdisciplinary research involving machine learning, statistics, and ethics.
  • Publishing and presenting research findings.
  • Participating in the research community and PhD training activities.
