PhD Researcher – Plastic-associated chemicals : The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is offering a limited contract for a 36-month position as a PhD Researcher within the nanoINHALE PhD cohort. The nanoINHALE project focuses on understanding the impacts of environmental plastics and associated chemicals on ecosystem functions and human health. This specific position in the Department of Exposure Science involves studying plastic-associated chemicals in lung tissues and storage lipids of wild biota from terrestrial environments. The candidate will also explore the leaching behavior of plastic-associated chemicals in artificial lung fluids, considering particle size effects.

Job Description:

PhD Researcher (f/m/x) – Plastic-associated chemicals in terrestrial biota, including simulated leaching

The successful candidate will focus on studying plastic-associated chemicals in the lung tissues and storage lipids of wild biota from terrestrial environments. Additionally, the candidate will investigate the leaching behavior of plastic-associated chemicals in artificial lung fluids, considering the influence of particle size on leaching and its impact on penetrability into the lung system. The role involves the establishment of extraction methods, improvement of analytical methods, application to samples from different species and tissues, and collaboration with other PhD positions within the nanoINHALE project.

Your Profile:

  • Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, or related fields
  • Experience in laboratory work and chemical analysis by LC or GC is advantageous
  • Experience with biota analysis and/or environmental studies is beneficial
  • Excellent communication skills (fluent English mandatory)
  • Team player with the ability to work independently in a self-organized way
  • Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary, international team
  • Some knowledge of German is helpful but not required for the job
