Scholarship & Project Description

The overarching goal of the research group is to improve prognostication and therapy selection for cancer patients by identifying novel biomarkers, exploring tumor biology, and discovering new therapeutic targets. The research bridges advanced wet-lab profiling methods (liquid biopsies, single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics) with sophisticated bioinformatic algorithms and AI architectures.

As a doctoral student in this translational team, your duties will include:

  • Leading computational projects focused on multimodal data integration in precision oncology.
  • Developing software infrastructure and analytical workflows for sequencing-based DNA data (including cell-free DNA from metastatic prostate cancer).
  • Designing analytical methods to evaluate single-cell spatial transcriptomics and protein expression profiles.
  • Building AI-based computer vision models for histopathological specimens (such as classifying lymphovascular invasion in primary breast cancer).
  • Writing scientific manuscripts, presenting research at international conferences, and participating in grant applications.

Eligibility & Qualification Requirements

Basic Eligibility

  • A completed second-cycle degree (Master’s level), or completion of at least 240 ECTS credits (with at least 60 credits at the advanced/second-cycle level), or equivalent qualifications obtained in Sweden or abroad.

Required Qualifications

  • Academic degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience in working with AI and machine learning models for image analysis.
  • Experience in sequencing-based DNA data analysis.
  • Practical exposure to spatial single-cell technologies.
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct independent computational work while collaborating effectively with clinical and experimental researchers.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.

Meritorious Qualifications

  • Advanced coursework or background in data science/computational biology applied to cancer research.
  • Prior experience developing prognostic or treatment-predictive biomarker discovery tools.
  • Previous research experience in prostate or breast cancer.
  • Familiarity with liquid biopsy analytical pipelines.
