PhD Scholarship in Anthropology of Medicine: Maastricht University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Anthropology of Medicine. Research Area: Anthropology of Medicine – Clinical Waste Practices

Location: Maastricht, Netherlands, with fieldwork in selected clinical sites globally (primarily in Ghana)

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed Master’s degree in relevant fields such as anthropology, sociology, or science and technology studies by August 31, 2024
  • Ethnographic fieldwork experience
  • Proficiency in English (C1 level, academic English)
  • Openness to creative methodologies and willingness to relocate to Maastricht or nearby area

Job Description:
The selected PhD candidate will actively contribute to the Make Do Medicine project, funded by the European Research Council. Responsibilities will include:

  • Setting up a personalized research project in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Planning and conducting 10 months of fieldwork in a hospital, community healthcare center, and/or rural clinic in Ghana (or other relevant site if suitable for the project and accessible)
  • Co-authoring publications and producing digital sensory material to complement the project’s open dataset
  • Active participation in group meetings, events, workshops, and optional teaching activities

The first interviews will take place on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, with subsequent interviews conducted if necessary. Shortlisted candidates will be given a brief assignment, and a reference check will be part of the application process.
