PhD Scholarship in Bioplastic Materials: Unlock the future of sustainable packaging with a PhD scholarship focused on developing seaweed-derived bioplastics. This project aims to enhance the properties of biomaterials through innovative biorefining techniques, contributing to environmental sustainability and circular economies.
Scholarship Opportunity: Manufacture of Seaweed-Derived Bioplastic Materials for a Circular Bioeconomy
Designation
PhD Scholarship in Seaweed-Derived Bioplastic Materials
Research Area
- Biochemical Engineering
- Bioprocess Engineering
- Materials Science
- Sustainable Packaging
Location
UCL East, University College London (UCL), London, UK
Eligibility/Qualification
- A strong academic background in biochemical engineering, materials science, or related fields.
- Experience and/or interest in bioprocess engineering and biomass handling is essential.
- Familiarity with materials characterization is desirable.
- Relevant industry experience in sustainable materials is welcome.
Description
This project addresses the significant issue of plastic waste pollution originating from fossil-based food packaging. By leveraging seaweed as a renewable feedstock for bioplastics, the scholarship offers an opportunity to research and develop biodegradable materials that compete with traditional plastics. The PhD candidate will focus on:
- Evaluating the performance of seaweed-based food packaging materials.
- Investigating the combination of seaweed-derived biopolymers with hydrophobic/philic compounds.
- Assessing mechanical and physicochemical properties.
- Conducting scale-up trials to analyze the lifecycle and techno-economic aspects of bioplastic manufacturing.
This scholarship is hosted in collaboration with Notpla Limited, a leader in sustainable packaging, providing candidates with valuable industrial insights and experience.
