PhD Scholarship in Computational Biology: The University of Oulu is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Computational Cancer Biology as part of the national 1000 doctorates pilot program. The successful candidate will join the research group of Associate Professor Valerio Izzi and participate in the education pilot in precision cancer medicine (iCANDOC). The scholarship provides an opportunity to complete a doctoral degree within three years with dedicated support and guidance.

Designation: Doctoral Researcher in Computational Cancer Biology

Research Area: Computational Cancer Biology, focusing on the interplay between heterogeneous tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, specifically the extracellular matrix (ECM).

Location: University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, data analysis, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, medicine, or related fields
  • Excellent command of R and/or Python and advanced knowledge of machine learning and deep learning
  • Experience with big data analysis (bulk and single-cell RNASeq, proteomics, spatial methods are considered an advantage)
  • Basic knowledge of cancer cell biology
  • Fluent in written and spoken English language
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Full dedication to the research project and ability to meet project deadlines

Job Description:
The chosen doctoral researcher will be involved in developing machine learning/AI algorithms to deconvolute the connections between ECM niches and functional cancer cell states at the single-cell, spatial, and proteomics level. The focus will be on identifying druggable ECM targets in cancer, to be validated in cellular and in vivo cancer models. The role also entails collaborating with national and international partners and participating in a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment.
