PhD Scholarship in Genomics and Bioinformatics: The Functional Genomics Group at the Institute of Genomics, Estonian Genome Center, University of Tartu invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Genomics and Bioinformatics. The doctoral research will focus on improving the prediction of common diseases by integrating genetic, multi-omics, and electronic health record data using advanced statistical, machine learning, and artificial intelligence approaches. The position offers an excellent opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally collaborative research environment.

Eligibility / Qualification

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Masterโ€™s degree (MSc) in Statistics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field
  • Strong foundation in statistics and commonly used machine learning methods
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English

Additional Assets (Desirable but Not Mandatory):

  • Experience with UNIX/Linux command-line tools
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) and/or cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud)
  • Experience analyzing health, genomic, or biological datasets

Job Description

The selected PhD candidate will:

  • Apply, implement, and further develop statistical, machine learning, and AI methods
  • Analyze large-scale genomic, multi-omics, and health record data
  • Contribute to research aimed at improving disease risk prediction
  • Work in an interdisciplinary research team
  • Participate in international research collaborations
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences
