PhD Scholarship in Maritime Cultures: The Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures (PCMC) at the University of Portsmouth announces a fully-funded three-year PhD scholarship in the field of humanities and social sciences. This scholarship presents an exciting opportunity for a doctoral researcher to delve into the first phase of the ‘Sail to Steam, Carbon to Green: Empowering Port Communities in the Global South’ project.

Fully-Funded PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Port Cities and Maritime Cultures

Designation: Doctoral Researcher

Research Area: Port cities, maritime cultures, sail to steam shipping, energy transition, and impact on coastal communities in the Global South.

Location: University of Portsmouth, with visiting scholarship in Callao, Peru

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A good first degree from an internationally recognized university (minimum upper second class or equivalent) or a Master’s degree in History or a relevant subject
  • Excellent proficiency in English (IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0)
  • Willingness to live and work in Portsmouth and Peru (Lima and Callao)
  • Ability to collaborate and co-produce outputs with community groups and stakeholders
  • Fluency in Spanish language skills (speaking and reading)

Job Description:
The successful candidate will engage in cross-disciplinary research encompassing historical research and social scientific data collection. The focus will be on understanding the impact of sail to steam shipping on communities and infrastructure in international sea ports of the Global South, particularly in the port city of Callao (Peru). Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with academics, creative practitioners, funders, and local community groups to explore the relationships between urban and maritime spaces.
